My First Car Project: The Daimler Limousine (DS420)

Everyone remembers their first car project—the excitement, the challenges, and the lessons that stay with you throughout your career. For me, that project was the Daimler Limousine (DS420). As a young apprentice stepping into the world of automotive manufacturing at Jaguar Cars, I had no idea that this classic vehicle would become such a significant part of my journey.

A First Step into the Industry

I started out in the Daimler Limousine production facility, where I was placed as a Body Engineering Apprentice. This was long before the digital era of design; everything was built by hand, and craftsmanship was at the heart of the process. My job was to support the team and learn as much as I could—helping to apply interior trim to these beautifully constructed vehicles.

Learning the Craft

Unlike today’s digital workflows, the production of the DS420 was all about traditional manual techniques. There were no 3D models or virtual prototypes—just hand-drawn blueprints and physical moulds that were painstakingly crafted by skilled engineers.

There was very little technology at the time; the cars were essentially hand-built. Being based in the manufacturing facility rather than the design studio gave me a deep appreciation for the level of craftsmanship and precision required to create such an iconic car.

A Lasting Impression

Although I wasn’t involved in shaping the design, I took immense pride in the role I played. Knowing that the vehicles I was helping to build were destined for royal households made it even more rewarding.

It’s a feeling that has stayed with me – the pride of contributing to something bigger, something that carries such prestige and history.

Looking Back

If I had the chance to work on the Daimler Limousine today, would I do anything differently? Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. Some designs simply stand the test of time. The DS420 was in production from 1968 to 1992, and no other limousine model has been delivered to more reigning monarchs. Even today, the car continues to serve the royal families of the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, and Luxembourg.

And they can’t be wrong.

Then vs. Now

Today, I’m proud to be part of Kadence, where we use advanced digital modelling to bring automotive designs to life. Technology has certainly transformed the way we work, but that early lesson—the importance of craftsmanship, precision, and pride—still guides everything I do.

🚗 What was your first automotive project? I’d love to hear your story! Head over to Kadence’s LinkedIn page and share your memories with us.
